Cortina leads the young classification at Kyoto stage

May 22, 2017

After 4.2km started from Fugenji fureaino Eki, riders have to do 6 laps circuit of 16.8 km course, where climber will be fighting for the red jersey, symbolizing the best climber of TOJ. After 105 km ride, we expected it’s going to be a bunch sprint at the finish line in stage 2 Kyoto.

We worked in a well-organized way, while a five-man breakaway is taking the lead. Team Bahrain-Merida was taking control of the peloton by Insausti, Per and Novak, while Feng was guarding our sprinter as a lead-out man in the bunch. However, when the breakaways were back, it was Marco Canola(Nippo – Vini Fantini) who launched the attack and made it all the way to the finish.

Our young Spaniard Iván García Cortina kept his white jersey successfully to Inabe stage, he took 6th place. “Today we tried to finish in a sprint, but 10 kilometers to go, Calona attacked in the climb, and the group didn’t have too much power, and the rest of the team worked so hard before that. At the last 2 kilometers, I tried to sprint, but it starts to feel like crampy, I will try again tomorrow.”

For Tristan Hoffman, our sports director, what we need to do is grab the chance for these promising 5, and once again he believes Cortina will find his rhythm and compete for the victory in the near future!

P.S.: Per had a minor crash in the final 2 laps, it was a fast corner in the downhill section, but he is sure that he will present himself at the start line tomorrow.
