With a decisive move in the finale of Stage 15 (Valdengo-Bergamo, 199 km) Vincenzo Nibali tried to take the win, but he couldn’t avoid the sprint of the small select group at the finish, where he took 7th place.
“I felt well and so I wanted to try something in the finale, that suited me” explains the Shark speaking after the finish in Bergamo “Indeed the last climb up to the upper city was good for a sleight of hand. But as I expected my rivals did not let me go. Anyway I’m happy about my attempt. I’m ready for the final week of the Giro”.
The 199km stage from Valdengo to Bergamo, was on a mixed and challenging route, with 2,000 m of total elevation. Flat in the first part but with two GPMs to climb (Miragolo San Salvatore and Selvino) before the finish line – followed by a long descent – then the route climbed up to the upper city, covering a part on cobbles too. It was there where Team Bahrain Merida started a great work to close down the breakaway and then to support Vincenzo’s move with 3 km to go.
“Today we tried to win the stage with Vincenzo and his attack showed that he is in good form” comments Sports Director Gorazd Stangelj, who is satisfied for the good team work of his guys “We’re getting ready for the crucial week of the Giro. On Tuesday, after the rest, the real climbs will begin and then we will see another race”.
In Bergamo at the end of the stage was held the awarding ceremony of Team BAHRAIN MERIDA, awarded by the organizer as “Winning Team” of yesterday’s stage.
