The first Milano-Sanremo of Team BAHRAIN MERIDA ends with the 13th place of Sonny Colbrelli.
After many years without wins, Italy’s hope of success at the Primavera laid with our rider, who was on form and showed it with the recent victory at the Paris-Nice.
But the first Classic Monument of the season has been resolved by the attack of Peter Sagan with 6 km to go on the ascent of Poggio. Just Michal Kwiatkowski and Julian Alaphilippe were able to join him.
Our Team moved to the front of the peloton with Sonny Colbrelli and Niccolò Bonifazio, to make the chase in order to finish with a bunch sprint. In Sanremo the three leaders kept enough advantage to avoid it and went to the line, where in Via Roma the Polish Kwiatkowski won the 108th edition of the race in front of the World Champion Sagan and Alaphilippe. The peloton crossed the line only five seconds later.
Speaking just after the finish Sonny Colbrelli said: “Too bad, because I was really close to join the three leaders when Sagan attacked. Maybe I did not really believe that I could. I was almost afraid to spend too much energy and not to be competitive at the end. I would like to look on the bright sight and I must say that I like this race. I’m conscious that sooner or later I will be able to be there with the first. I’m confident for next year and I would like to say thank you to my teammates for their great job today”.
“The Team worked very well indeed” adds SD Alberto Volpi “We remained united at decisive stages of the race. Too bad that Sonny couldn’t join the three leaders. But overall the balance is good. The Team moved to the front of the peloton several times, on the descent in the last km, even if without chance to chase the leaders. The final result, the 13th place of Sonny, is not brilliant, but I’m satisfied of the job of the guys”.
